Brief summary

Globally, the stability of the emergency department (ED) workforce is compromised (Sharplin et al., 2025). Workforce issues within EDs are unique and complex and can significantly impact patient care, staff well-being, overall department competency, and cost. Addressing these issues requires comprehensive evidence-based strategies, including workforce planning, improved staffing models, staff support programs, ongoing training, and organisational culture change to foster a safe, supportive, and sustainable work environment.

Interventions

Staff who are on duty in the participating EDs at any time during a predetermined data collection period (who have provided informed consent to participate) will complete an online survey, Quantitative and qualitative data shall be collected in this survey which will have been piloted in advance. The overall time interval for participation is a predetermined 24-hour period. It is anticipated that it will take 15minutes for participants to complete the survey. Inclusion criteria

ED staff scheduled to be working in the ED during the 24-hour study period (including clinical and nonclinical staff)

Exclusion criteria

ED staff who decline participation or are unable to participate. ED staff who are supporting the conduct of the study as named collaborators or investigators
