Brief summary

This study builds on previous research which indicates that iodine deficiency is still a problem pregnant women in New Zealand, and there are probably low intakes of other essential nutrients namely selenium, iron and zinc. All these nutrients are important in production of thyroid hormones which are critical for fetal growth and development. New Zealand recommendations are that pregnant women have take iodine supplements to ensure an adequate intake throughout pregnancy. The hypothesis of this study is that for iodine deficient women who start iodine supplementation during pregnancy, thyroid hormone production decreases which can potentially compromise optimal fetal development. By investigating iodine and other important nutrients needed for thyroid metabolism, we can better understand if the current guidelines could adversely affect infant development. This study will investigate the role of intake of iodine, selenium, zinc, iron and sodium from diet and supplements in thyroid function through out pregnancy. 100 pregnant women will be recruited and seen at 3 time points (10-15 weeks, 24-26 weeks and 34-36 weeks of gestation). Study visits will take approximately 2 hours and will comprise questionnaires, body composition measures, collection of blood and urine samples, and provision of a 3 day diet record and details for collecting nail clippings. Additionally, at approximately 6-8 weeks postpartum an infant nail sample is requested.

Interventions

During the study we will recruit 100 pregnant women and follow them over three time points during their pregnancy (10-15 weeks, 24-26 weeks and 34-36 weeks of pregnancy) and one further time point following the pregnancy (when infant is 6 - 8 weeks of age). Women will attend the Human Nutrition Research Unit at Massey University in Palmerston North. At each of the visit's researchers will administer 2 x questionnaires anticipated to take 20 minutes each, measure height, weight and body compositi

After each visit participants will be asked to complete a 3-day food diary and also to collect nail clippings which they will post back to the researchers. After birth, participants will also be asked to provide nail clippings from their infants between 6 and 8 weeks of age. Intake (from diet and supplements) of the iodine, selenium, zinc, iron and sodium will be determined and compared to thyroid function at the three time points during pregnancy. Infant nail mineral content (selenium and zinc) will be compared to maternal intake during pregnancy.

Aged over 18 years old Less than 15 weeks pregnant Singleton pregnancy (only 1 fetus) No history of thyroid disease.
