Brief summary
The primary aim of this study is to investigate if the introduction of a 6 week neuromuscular training program compared to usual physical training results in fewer lower limb injuries in New Zealand Army recruits during basic training. A secondary aim will investigate if a 6 week neuromuscular training program compared to usual physical training results in fewer health care encounters and lower health care costs from injuries sustained during basic training. It is hypothesised, that during basic training, recruits participating in the intervention compared to the usual training group will have: i) fewer lower limb injuries; and ii) fewer health care provisions and lower costs for injuries sustained. Study design: cluster randomised controlled trial. The intervention consists of a 6-week neuromuscular training program involving a light run warm up and a circuit of 14 plus exercises that include strength, technique, core stability, motor control and plyometric training performed at low to moderate intensity. The neuromuscular training intervention exercises are administered by 2 qualified and experienced Army Physical Training Instructors trained by a physiotherapist. Exercises are performed 3-5 sessions per week which was determined by the existing physical training schedule. Usual training involved running based warm up exercises performed at low to moderate intensity and 3 -5 sessions per week..
