Brief summary
The disability associated with a minor to moderate injury sustained in a road traffic crash (RTC) can have a significant impact on a range of life domains, one of which is returning to paid employment. This inception cohort study will follow people injured in a road traffic crash (RTC) from within 28 days of injury over 12 months. It is intended that multiple hospital health services will be recruited across Queensland. Participants will also be recruited through print and social media. The specific aims of the study are as follows: • Aim 1: To plot the trajectory of recovery of vocational and functional outcomes following RTC • Aim 2: To explore associations between key sociodemographic, injury, quality of life, physical activity, symptomatic, and psychosocial wellbeing factors with vocational and functional outcomes at 6 and 12 months • Aim 3: To determine the factors that predict vocational and functional outcomes at 6 and 12 months, for people who had been working prior to RTC • Aim 4: To determine the factors that predict functional outcomes at 6 and 12 months, for people who had not been working prior to RTC • Aim 5: To explore the pattern of objectively measured physical activity changes in a subgroup of participants at baseline, 6 and 12 months
Interventions
Queensland residents (aged 18 to 64 years) injured in a road traffic crash in Queensland in the 28 days prior to the day of baseline data collection. Participants will complete questions on vocational, quality of life, pain, disability, psychosocial wellbeing, sleep, physical activity and sedentary behaviour outcomes at baseline (within 28 days post road traffic crash), and 6 and 12 months post baseline (via self-report questionnaire). In addition, participants will complete questions on vocational outcomes at 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 9 months post baseline. A sub-set of participants will have their physical activity and sedentary behaviour objectively measured at baseline, 6 and 12 months.

Inclusion criteria
Sustained an injury as a result of a road traffic crash in Queensland and has sought advice from a medical practitioner or other healthcare provider Diagnosis of injury and recruitment must be within 28 days of the road traffic crash Queensland resident aged 18 to 64 years Proficient in English language
Exclusion criteria
Road traffic crash did not involve a motorised vehicle Severe injuries (including severe traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, extensive burns or multiple amputations) Injury required hospitalisation for more than 10 days Injury was a result of intentional self-harm Dementia or significant cognitive impairment that affects ability to provide informed consent
