Brief summary

To assess the long-term effects on functional and mobility outcomes of Pilates exercise interventions for the management of patients with ankylosing spondylitis. The propose of this study was to assess the effects of Pilates training on functional capacity, disease activity, and spinal mobility in patients with ankylosing spondylitis. The study was quasi experimental, prospective and single-blind trial. In an extended 12 months follow-up, 11 patients who were diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis according to the modified criteria of New York, and who performed their Pilates exercise program twice times a week for 12 months, were included in this long-term study. Evaluations were just before, fourth month, eighth month and twelfth month following the treatment. Primary outcome measure was functional capacity using the Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Functional Index (BASFI). Exploratory outcome measures were Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Index (BASDAI), Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Metrology Index (BASMI), Chest expansion and finger to floor distance. Our study is the first research designed to investigate the role of Pilates method with 12 months follow-up in ankylosing spondylitis treatment. We consider that further research with more participants, could help assess the therapeutic value in the management of patients who have ankylosing spondylitis.

Interventions

Pilates exercise program of 1 h was given by a certified physiotherapist to 11 participants 2 times a week for 12 months. Exercise program followed the basic principles of Pilates method but particularly movements with low and medium difficulty levels were chosen to adapt the program to the physical capacity of the patients. Resistance bands, foam roller, hoop and 26 cm Pilates balls were used as supportive equipment. We used a register of attendance at Pilates sessions. The adherence was 92.3% during the year of follow-up.

Presence of any contraindications to the exercises Wound: not be placed on wounds because bands are not sterile Severe trauma General edema (swelling dynamic) caused by heart or kidney problems. Cancer Material used allergy. Pregnancy.
