Brief summary

The aim of this study is to examine for differences in pulmonary function before and after the application of manual therapy to the thoracic spine and thorax (i.e., chest wall). We hypothesize that pulmonary function will improve following the application of manual therapy and that the improvement will be sustained throughout the post-intervention period.

Interventions

Manual therapy, including high-velocity, low amplitude manipulation and low velocity mobilization applied to the thoracic spine and costovertebral joints. The manual therapy will take place during one ten minute treatment session.

Healthy

Exclusion criteria

history of pulmonary disease (e.g., asthma, emphysema), smoking within the past 12 months, manual therapy in the previous 7 days, use of medications that affect pulmonary function, current pregnancy, or contraindications to manual therapy.
