Brief summary

The purpose of the study is to answer three key research questions: 1. What effect does supervised, progressive resistance training (PRT) have on the number and incidence of falls in older adults with impaired balance? 2. What effect does supervised, PRT have on balance in older adults with impaired balance? 3. What effect does supervised, PRT have on self-reported quality of life of older adults with impaired balance?

Interventions

- Progressive Resistance Training - Twice a week for 12 weeks - Each session 45 mins - 1 hour duration - Aerobic warm up and cool down involving either treadmill or bike for 3-5 minutes at the beginning and end of each session. - The intensity will be set between 70-80% of 1-Repetition Maximum (1-RM), two sets of 10-15 repetitions. - 8-10 lower limbs exercises - The exercise will be administered by an Exercise Physiologist; initially 1:1, and then in small groups with close supervision.

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion critera: - Referral to Centre for Physical Activity in Ageing (CPAA) - 65 yrs of age or older - Berg Balance Scale (BBS) score of <45/56; and/or one or more falls in the last 12 months; or reason for referral to improve balance.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: - Current participation in a supervised strength training program. - Contraindications to high-intensity resistance training e.g. rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, neurological conditions etc. - History of dementia or cognitive impairment.
