Brief summary

The study evaluated the efficacy of a universal prevention program for adolescent depression implemented by school teachers in Mauritius. We predicted that adolescents who completed the intervention would report less depressive symptoms, better coping skills and higher self-esteem than chilldren who did not receive the intervention. We also predicted that the program would be acceptable to both teachers and students in Mauritius.

Interventions

The intervention was 11 weekly 1-hour sessions of a group program developed to address the prevention of adolescent depression (The Resourceful Adolescent Program - Adolescent version). The manualised program included the following strategies: identify personal strengths, identify bodily cues and "self-talk", develop self-soothing strategies, challenge negative self-talk, develop social problem-solving skills, learn conflict resolution and make use of social resources.
